Confraternity of the Rosary
Confraternity of the Rosary is one of the
most efficacious means of spreading devotion
to the Rosary in parishes.
the early days of the Rosary devotion, it
was spread in the fifteenth century by
Blessed Alain de la Roche who assures us
that he received its statutes from the
Blessed Virgin Herself.
Confraternity of the Rosary offers its
members the following immense advantages:-
altogether special protection of the Queen
of Heaven. (See the Encyclical of Leo XIII
of September 8th, 1893)
2. A special
participation during life, at the hour of
death, and after death, in all the prayers,
penances, and good works of the numerous
members of this Confraternity, spread
throughout the entire world. What a treasure
of graces for the living and the dead!
3. An immense
treasure of indulgences granted to this
Confraternity and applicable to the souls in
Purgatory. The Rosary is "the Queen of
indulged devotions", and the Confraternity
of the Rosary is the richest Confraternity
in indulgences. This is what led St.
Alphonsus to say: "After Holy Mass the best
means of relieving the souls in Purgatory is
to join the Confraternity of the Rosary".
is capital in the eyes of the Saints and of
the Sovereign Pontiffs.
Borromeo esteemed the Confraternity of the
Rosary so highly, that he ordered it to be
erected in all the parishes of his large
Archdiocese of Milan!
de Liguori wrote on the utility of the
Confraternity: "In the many missions I have
preached, I have come to the conclusion that
there are more sins in one single man who
does not belong to the Confraternity of Mary
than in twenty who do!"
The Holy Curé
d'Ars said: "If anyone has the happiness of
being in the Confraternity of the Rosary, he
has, in all corners of the globe, brothers
who pray for him". And he added "For a
member of the Confraternity of the Rosary to
succeed in losing his soul, he would have to
do himself as much violence as the other
faithful do to save their souls, so abundant
are the graces of this Confraternity"
Leo XIII has
insisted very much on the Confraternity of
the Rosary especially in the encyclicals
"Laetitiae Sanctae" of 1893 and
"Augustissimae Virginis" of 1897. "Among the
different associations," he wrote. "We do
not hesitate to give the place of honour to
the Confraternity of the Rosary." And, after
explaining how the Confraternity multiplies
the benefits of the Rosary, the great Pope
makes earnest appeals to priests and
"You ought", he said, "to apply yourselves
with the greatest zeal to founding,
developing and directing these
Confraternities of the Rosary. This appeal
is addressed not only to the sons of St.
Dominic, for whom this is an important duty
of their state, but to all priests who have
the care of souls. It is also our earnest
desire that missionaries, those who take the
Gospel to pagan lands as well as those who
preach in Christian countries, give
themselves with equal zeal to this
activity". (Laetitiae Sanctae).
To join the
Confraternity of the Rosary and to share in
its immense advantages, it is sufficient:
(a) to have
one's name inscribed on the Register of the
(b) To promise
to recite, at least once a week, the whole
Rosary, i.e., three Rosaries, while
meditating on the Fifteen Mysteries. This
promise is not a vow and does not bind under
pain of sin, except that those who are not
habitually faithful to it are deprived of
the immense spiritual goods and indulgences
of the Confraternity. The three Rosaries and
even the individual decades may be

manner of doing it is to recite two decades
on week days and three on Sundays,
meditating successively on the Fifteen
Mysteries. In this way the three Rosaries
are said in the week, which is the minimum
required to gain the spiritual favours of
the Confraternity of the Rosary. Happy are
those who can do more!
And you who
already recite your Rosary daily, have your
name inscribed in the Confraternity of the
Rosary without delay, for without any
additional obligation, you will share in all
the spiritual treasures of this rich
Confraternity. What a pity to deprive
yourself of them.
is required either for inscription or
afterwards. Therefore there is no pecuniary
expense either for the poor or for the
the Confraternity of the Rosary does not
involve any external interference in the
parish, for it is a parochial work, entirely
under the control of the Pastor who is
always the Director. In parishes where there
are several districts to be served, it forms
a centre of prayer in each. It renders
invaluable service in grouping the faithful
and maintaining the parochial spirit,
especially on a Sunday, if on this day Mass
cannot be celebrated there.
advantage it is for a parish to have this
Confraternity to keep it living and active,
and to spread among the faithful the love of
the holy Rosary, so earnestly demanded by
the Blessed Virgin as a remedy of divine
efficacy for present-day evils, and which
according to Pius XI "will save the world!"
and recommended to all parishes in the
Diocese Right Rev. Crispian Hollis, Bishop
of Portsmouth, ENGLAND.
