Children's Book

I have been working for some time on a children's book and hope to publish it in the New Year. I started writing it after seeing many of the books that children were reading in the lessons I covered as a supply teacher. I won't go into the details, but suffice to say there is very little “moral” children's literature nowadays, and some, perhaps most, of what is available is distinctly unhealthy, If not positively bad.

Anyway, I have some ideas for follow up books, but obviously it all takes money, so I will be very grateful for any donations to aid publication, and towards the general costs of running the Theotokos site.

The book's theme centres around time travel, and involves three teenagers, two boys and a girl, who are cousins. One of these is American, (the main character), and is aged 15, the other two are English, aged 14 and 12. They travel back in time to France in the year 1940, via Glastonbury Tor, but it's more of a “spiritual” type of time travel than science fiction, and there is a strong religious focus in the book.

They are given a mission by an Angel-type figure to help some refugees escape from the country, and particularly a German couple with a young son – the wife is Jewish, but a convert to Catholicism. Gradually a group assembles, including some RAF officers whose plane has been shot down, as they stay at an isolated farmhouse. There, they realise that the most obvious way to get out of the country is to go south to the Spanish border, by train, and then to Lisbon. But it's a very long and dangerous journey, and they would also have to cross the Pyrenees.

I won't say any more, in case you would like to read it. The book is aimed at children aged 11-13 ideally, but would also be suitable for older children and adults too I think.

Here are some comments from people who have read a draft of the text:

“Compelling read ...very good story … good plot … religion dealt with in right way … joy in reading it.”

“Gripping stuff for the age group it is directed at, with just the tight approach and tone … particularly liked the time/place atmosphere you managed to create.”

“It's certainly very readable, and you have concocted a fascinating plot ...The build-up of excitement towards the end was fantastic!”

“I very much enjoyed the novel ... I can imagine children finding it very exciting indeed... a good balance of pace, conversation and explanations. I particularly liked the characterisations, and the natural way that you introduce 'apologetics'.”

Medjugorje – decision in the New Year?

There are indications that some form of negative decision about Medjugorje may well be in the pipeline, given a letter issued by the Apostolic Nuncio in the US, following instructions from Archbishop (now Cardinal) Müller, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in late 2013, as well as the various statements made by or attributed to the Pope in recent months, and in particular his statement that, “Our Lady… is not a postmistress, sending messages every day.”

Given the above, if you haven’t already done so, please have a look at my updated, revised and expanded Medjugorje Book, entitled:

Part of the work of making the Fatima message much better known involves going around with a laptop-projector-screen setup to show DVDs/presentations on Fatima. This is absolutely vital work, so any help whether financial or material, or indeed through prayer, is very welcome.

Latest news from the Foyers de Charité - Marthe Robin declared Venerable by Pope Francis

On 7 November 2014, Pope Francis authorised the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate a decree recognising the heroic virtues of Marthe Robin (1902 -1981), a French lay woman who founded the Foyers de Charité. This is an essential step towards beatification.

In proclaiming Marthe Robin “Venerable”, the Church gives as a model for Christians the way in which she lived the theological virtues (faith, hope and charity) and the cardinal virtues (justice, prudence, courage and temperance). The Church recognises the exemplary value of the life of Marthe, who gave herself entirely to God and to others in a selfless way.

The Postulator of the Cause of Beatification, Fr Bernard Peyrous, will shortly present in Rome a file containing details of a miracle obtained through the intercession of Marthe Robin. This miracle will first go through a diocesan enquiry and will then be studied by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints who will look at testimonies, documents and scientific studies.

If the commission responsible for this enquiry recognises the validity of the miracle, then the Pope can declare her “Blessed”.

You can see details about this here:

Foyer de Charité Retreats

In 2015, there will be further Foyer retreats for English speaking retreatants, two of which will be in England. There will also be two retreats in France, one at the Foyer of Tressaint, in Brittany and another at Chateauneuf de Galaure, the “mother house” of the Foyer movement.

The retreats in England will be at Pantasaph, from 12-18 April 2015; this will be preached by Fr David Hartley, while the retreat at the Sion Community Brentwood, from 12-18 July 2015, will be preached by Fr Keith Barltrop.

Approval of the WAF in England & Wales by Rt Rev Mark O’Toole, Bishop of Plymouth

I am the Secretary of WAF England & Wales, and the big recent news about the organisation is that the National President, Timothy Tindal-Robertson, who lives in the diocese of Plymouth, recently had a meeting with his bishop, Rt. Rev. Mark O’Toole, to inform him about the WAF and request his approval for the work that it undertakes in the Church in this country.

Following this meeting, in a letter dated 31st October 2014, the bishop wrote to Timothy and said,

“I am particularly pleased to be able to affirm the work that you are doing to promote the regular saying of the Rosary, particularly in family life. I hope that this work will continue to grow in these years, especially as we approach the Centenary of the Apparitions at Fatima in 2017 … and I will continue to pray for the success of the World Apostolate of Fatima in this country. Thank you for all that you do”.

A PDF of the letter can be accessed here:

The WAF in England & Wales also now has a website:

Promoting Fatima - Presentations and Fatima Days

WAF England & Wales is pressing forward with promoting the Fatima message, and offers Fatima Presentations and Fatima Days around the country. These comprise an introductory talk and DVD on the message of Fatima, as seen through the lives of the two shepherd children, Bl Francisco and Jacinta, and a PowerPoint presentation explaining how the Rosary and the Five First Saturdays devotion can revitalise personal faith and authentic spirituality in the life of the parish or group.

You can contact me, Donal Foley, if you think there might be an opportunity for him to give a Fatima Presentation in your parish or area, at:

These presentations generally last between one and half hours and two hours. There are also books, booklets and DVDs available for sale. Please see:

Marthe Robin and the Foyers of Charity by Martin Blake

Now that Marthe Robin has been declared venerable, this is the ideal time to read Martin Blake’s Marthe Robin and the Foyers of Charity . If you order now, you should have a copy by Christmas.

In this book, you will learn about the early life and mission of Marthe Robin, and how she gradually became paralysed and was confined to bed. The book also has details of how she received the stigmata in 1930, and began to live Christ's passion every week, as well as how she met Fr Georges Finet and they founded the First Foyer in l936.

Marthe Robin and the Foyers of Charity also has fascinating details of the witness of some of the 100,000 visitors she received over 50 years, including what prominent figures thought of her. These include Jean Guitton, Marcel Clément, Fr Marie-Dominque Philippe OP, the founder of the Community of St John, and Fr Jacques Ravanel, the immediate successor of Fr Finet as the head of the Foyer movement, and Marthe's first postulator.

There are now 75 Foyer communities throughout the world, and their work involves a priest, the Father of the Foyer, giving 5 day retreats in silence, during which the members of the community look after the needs of the retreatants and pray for them.

If you want to learn about the life of this amazing French mystic, now declared Venerable, then Marthe Robin and the Foyers of Charity is the perfect introduction.

The International Crusade for Moral Reform was founded by Father Bryan Storey of Tintagel, Cornwall, UK in 1986, and has since grown to have followers all over the world. I.C.M.R. is dedicated to promoting chastity, which is basic to the integrity of the human person. It is through inner strength, peace and true love that real harmony is established in human life and relationships. Members, individuals and groups, engage themselves in prayer, fasting and self-denial, education and action.

The Knights of Our Lady – MSM (Militia Sanctae Mariae)

The M.S.M. was founded in France in 1945 to create a new chivalry suitable for our times, regular and militant, adapted to the needs of the modem world, devoted to Mary, dedicated to the service of the Church and our neighbours, with a view to "enlarging on earth the frontiers of the Kingdom of God".

Membership is in two categories: observantia (men who are squires and knights) and familia (servants, men and women, spouses and sisters, together with spiritual supporters).

While promoting a profound spiritual and liturgical life among its members, it vigorously defends fidelity and obedience to the Church and the Sovereign Pontiff.

At the moment, the Knights are working towards Church Recognition of the Order as an International Association of the Faithful. So this is a time of expansion for the Order and enquiries about membership would be most welcome.

Flavigny Benedictines’ English Retreats

Details of the excellent Ignatian retreats from the Flavigny Benedictines can be seen at their website at:

There are retreats in Ireland, England and Australia. I was at one at Pantasaph in North Wales a few years ago, having done a similar retreat at Flavigny itself in 2007 – I can heartily recommend such a retreat to anyone who is looking for an authentic spiritual experience as a way of getting closer to God.

Christmas prayer to St Andrew

”Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God! to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.”

Imprimatur +MICHAEL AUGUSTINE, Archbishop of New York, New York, February 6, 1897

It is piously believed that whoever recites the above prayer fifteen times a day from the feast of St. Andrew - 30th November - until Christmas will obtain what is asked. This is a nice prayer to print off, place in front of your computer etc - you can download a printable PDF version here:
